Learn about Airport Runway Runs (Walks) and Plane Pulls
As a travel and aviation nerd, I like to look for unique aviation experiences. There are many things AVGeek-related, such as airshows, museums, plane spotting, collector shows, and behind-the-scenes airport tours. But two additional aviation-related events are runway walks and plane pulls. Often, these events are tied to a charity, so participating will also raise money for something worthwhile.
These events can be found around the world, so I wanted to write about what they are and where you can find one.
Runway Runs (Walks)
Runway Runs take place at airports and usually involve walking or running on a runway and taxiways. The organizers plan a safe route for participants and, like other running events, have several categories for distance and speed. Most of these are family-friendly, and you will see people with strollers as well as kids participating. The distance depends on location but usually is 1 mile, 5K (3.1 miles), or 10K (6.2 miles). Often these events end with an award ceremony for the fastest in various categories.

Plane Pulls
Plane Pulls are a completely different beast where you work as part of a team playing tug-of-war against a 100,000+ pound plane, with a goal to move it as quickly as possible across the finish line, usually 12 to 25 feet. Teams typically consist of 15 to 25 people who all pull on a rope at the same time. Often teams are companies or organizations competing for the fastest time. Aircraft range from regional jets to Boeing 737s, 757s, or even military cargo planes.
Below is a listing of known plane pulls sorted by state.

Closing Thoughts
Both of these events can give you an opportunity to get close to planes, get some exercise, and support a good cause. I have not done either of these, but I am making it a goal and bucket list item for this year. If you know of an event that is not listed on this page, please contact us, and we will get it added to the guide.
