San Francisco (SFO) Observation Decks: SkyTerrace & Outdoor Terrace
San Francisco International Airport (SFO) offers two observation decks, including the SkyTerrace in Terminal 2 and the Outdoor Terrace in the International Terminal. One of these decks is located pre-security (landside), and the other is located post-security (airside); both are free to access. While these are not lounges, they do offer an opportunity to escape the terminal, get some fresh air, and enjoy some snacks while watching planes (plane spotting).
The SFO SkyTerrace (Landside)
Opened on February 14, 2020, San Francisco invested $6.3 million in the new outdoor patio called the SkyTerrace. This observation deck is located landside, so you don't need a ticket to gain access.
Located pre-security in Terminal 2, the 1,460-square-foot (136 m²) SkyTerrace is open to the public and provides 180-degree views of the busiest section of SFO, where all four runways intersect. The SkyTerrace is open Friday through Monday from 10:00 to 18:00 (6pm).
Note: Visitors must clear a simple security check before entering the space, but no boarding pass is required for access.
The terrace features wooden chairs, benches, and small tables, with drought-tolerant landscaping and bird-safe glass panels, which also provide wind protection and great views. Food and beverages are permitted on the SkyTerrace (and, according to reviews, you can bring in outside food and drinks).
There is also an inside (lobby) area with seating with limited outside views. While visiting, check out SFO Museum's exhibition, The 1954 San Francisco International Airport Terminal, on view in the SkyTerrace lobby. This exhibition explores the history and architecture of the facility that previously existed in the area where the SkyTerrace is now located.
SFO Outdoor Terrace (Airside)
Also, located at SFO, but post-security is the Outdoor Terrace. This observation deck is located in the International Terminal G, near Gate G12, and is open daily from 07:00 to 22:30 (11:30 pm). The patio is located on the mezzanine and accessible by elevator or escalator. This patio has a stated seating capacity for 89 people, and also features 180-degree views of the airfield. Like the other terrace, it provides bird-safe glass with drought-tolerant landscaping, plus three bronze sculptures.
The Terrace features wooden chairs, tables, chaise loungers, and succulents. There is a coffee shop and other food options located just inside the door from the terrace.

Closing Thoughts
There are many observation decks found at many airports worldwide. But one nice thing is that SFO provides both a landside and airside option. It is also worth mentioning that the Air Canada - Maple Leaf Lounge (SFO) has an outdoor terrace for those visiting that lounge.
