The (East) Terrace at the Austin Begrstrom Airport (AUS) has recently been transformed from the Chase Sapphire Terrace to a free outdoor observation deck. I visited the terrace on April 30, 2025, and here is some general information and a quick review.

The open-to-the-public observation deck is situated above gate 1, next to the Delta Sky Club. You can access the patio using one of the two spiral staircases or an elevator. For the past two years, this area has been only accessible to customers with the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card, but now is free to everyone. The inside area near the deck also has some seating and power outlets.

The newly re-opened terrace opened to the public on April 22, 2025, and is open daily from 08:00 to 20:00 (8 pm). The patio has lots of seating and tables, so you can enjoy food and beverages while waiting for your flight. Recycling and trash containers are also located on the deck for convenience. Speakers are on the deck so you can hear the airport announcements while relaxing outside. There is also a public (air-conditioned) restroom with a baby changing table at the patio area.

As an AVGeek, the deck offers a view to the east and is a great place for planespotting since there is a direct view of the 9,000-foot runway (18L/36R) and the ramp area.

Pro Tip: Austin-Bergstrom Airport allows customers to purchase alcohol at certain venues to carry around the terminal. This option lets you take your drinks, food, and snacks to the outside terrace.

The terrace spans 3,994 square feet (371 m²) and is the second airside outdoor patio at the Austin airport, the other being the outdoor patio at the soon-to-close South Terminal. Plans have been shared that indicate another (much smaller) outdoor terrace will open as part of the west infill project sometime in 2027.

Rating 3.9

Summary: This (free) outdoor area is great for relaxing before or after a flight when the Austin weather permits.

Closing Thoughts

This is a great place to get some fresh air and is family-friendly. It may not be a great place to work since there is no power in the outdoor area. In regards to weather, October-November and March-April are likely the best times to visit this terrace. I also think it would be nice if they had vending machines in the area inside the patio.
